Can I sing you a lullaby?
Can I hear you cry, once more?
Just to know that you are here.
I can’t believe it’s been almost a year
Since I heard you cry, that was my lullaby.
Let me think back and remember
How your personality grew since November.
The twinkle in your eye, as you peered upon your books
You gave such inquisitive looks.
Your brow so furrowed, with so much to ponder
For you, everything was a wonder.
The twinkling lights, the beeping sounds,
This is how your world went ’round.
You didn’t know about your condition
Or the TPN that was your nutrition
Or what your vital signs were showing
Or the dialysis that kept you going.
You just cried when I came in the room
Knowing you needed mom as soon
As you were aware of my presence.
You needed to be heard and loved
And so I thank the Lord above
That I heard you cry.
Can you hear me cry, too?
A beautiful poem for a beautiful girl
