3.24.2021 Surgery Update

EmyG is now out of surgery. She is intubated and will remain so for at least a day or two. She will also remain sedated.

The surgeon found a perforation in her bowel, and the surrounding area was necrotic. She had 5cm of intestine removed and sutured back together. As a result of the perforation, the contents of her bowel had leaked into her abdomen. This contaminated her peritoneal dialysis catheter, so it had to be removed.

This changes a lot for EmyG. She will have to be on a type of hemodialysis called continual renal replacement therapy (CRRT). She has had this in the past, so we are confident she will be fine on it. Unfortunately, she will need to be on CRRT for at least 6 weeks before they can put another peritoneal dialysis catheter in. She will also not be able to take feeds for at least 6 weeks while her bowels heal. After those 6 weeks, they can put a new peritoneal dialysis catheter in. Two weeks after that, she can go back on peritoneal dialysis.

This has been a major setback. This does not change her prognosis, rather it makes the path to a kidney more winding and convoluted. But she will get there. God is good.

  1. Ezra, thank you and Rebekah for allowing us to follow this journey with you and EmyG. We often learn more from the twists and turns in the winding paths than we do from a straight shot. I continue to pray for healing, peace and comfort to the greatest extent that serves the highest good for Emy, Rebekah and you. I am reminded of a song by Trevor Hall- You Can’t Rush Your Healing. God ALWAYS inserts the silver linings. There is purpose in the “darkness”. It can be viewed as a setback, however God is at work here and I know you recognize the importance of the “pause”. I will help hold space for you and Rebekah to take a breath and feel Gods love-Selah.
